Stephen Street Bridge Mosaics

With the title Blowing in the Wind, Water Under the Bridge: Our Hopes for and Memories of Lemont, visitors to downtown Lemont now experience a beautiful and poetic crossing of the old I & M Canal at Stephen Street. In the spring of 2006 the Art & Culture Commission sponsored an event in which community members of all ages gathered under a tent in historic downtown Lemont to stamp words and shapes into slabs of moist clay. These slabs were cut, fired, and glazed under the supervision of ceramic artist Sonata Kazimieraitis to make one-of-a-kind ceramic tiles. These hand-made tiles were jointed with commercially produced ones to create eighteen mural panels for the bridge columns on the east and west sides of the bridge. These panels were produced and installed by lead artist Rob Moriarty and a local team of six assistant and apprentice artists that summer.

The following summer, four more panels were produced for the columns on the south side of the bridge to complete the mosaic.
